Stuck trying to verify your phone number in Modern Warfare 2? As an additional layer of security against cheaters for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Infinity Ward requires each player to verify their identity by linking their phone number before playing. This shouldn’t be too much of a problem for most players, but a portion of Steam users seem to be experiencing the same issue where they’re being asked to verify their number when they’ve done so before, and can’t continue because Steam won ‘Don’t let them check their phone numbers too often in a short period of time.
This is a cruel problem for gamers who just want to get stuck into the latest Call Of Duty action. Fortunately, there is a fairly simple solution, which we will detail in this guide. Follow the steps below and you’ll be back playing TDM and Prisoner Rescue in no time.
How to Fix Mobile Phone Verification Issue in Modern Warfare 2
If you’re one of the many Steam players stuck at the “Mobile Phone Number Required” screen after launching Modern Warfare 2, here’s how to fix it.
The first time, just click the “Go to Steam Account” button and you’ll be prompted for a phone number (if your Steam account doesn’t already have one), then type in the short verification code that Steam will send you by text message.
After that, close the Steam window and click “I’ve already added a phone number” to continue to Modern Warfare 2 itself.
On subsequent launches of the game, however, you may be prompted to verify your number again despite already doing so – and Steam may not let you verify it because you have already done so recently. If this happens to you, here’s what you should do:
- Open Steam.
- Click “Steam” in the upper left corner, then click “Settings”.
- Under the “Account” tab, click on “View account details” in the upper right corner of the window.
- Under ‘Contact information’, click on ‘Manage your phone number’.
- Click “Remove Number” and follow the next on-screen steps to remove your phone number from Steam.
- Now open Modern Warfare 2 and follow the standard steps on the “Mobile Number Required” screen to add your phone number back.
It’s not ideal, but until this annoying issue for Steam users is fixed, this is the workaround. Simply unlink your phone number from your Steam account and add it again. You might have to do this multiple times, but it doesn’t seem like the problem occurs every time you launch the game, at least.
