- Rs 18,549 was twice debited from the victim’s account

Bombay: A 55-year-old man from Maharashtra’s capital Mumbai fell prey to a cyber crook and lost Rs 2.83 lakh. The cops have filed an FIR in connection with this case.
Elaborating on the case, police said the victim had purchased the cell phone online. However, when ordering, he encountered some obstacles during payment, because his transaction was declined first. So, he made the payment again and the transaction in the amount of Rs 18,549 was successful, after which the man got the mobile on the e-commerce site.
Meanwhile, when his credit card bill was generated, the victim was shocked to see Rs 18,549 debited twice and thus contacted the bank in this regard. Bank officials assured him that his money would be credited to his card soon and in an effort to complete the process, the man was asked to contact the e-commerce site he made the purchase from.
The bank executive was unable to provide the customer service contact number of the e-commerce site to the man and asked him to surf online, as a result of which the complainant found a number online and dialed the same.
The victim did not know that the cell phone number on the net belonged to a con artist and he followed the instructions given to him. The fake customer service asked him to download a mobile app to which he gave his consent. Meanwhile, the fraudster managed to siphon Rs 2,17,783 from his bank account and Rs 63,325 from his credit card.
In no time, the accused realized he had been duped and approached the cops to file a complaint about it. As a result, a case was filed against the accused under section 420 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and 66C and 66D of the Computer Law.
