BERLIN, Germany & NEW YORK–(BUSINESS WIRE)–N26, the mobile bank that enables users in 24 markets to control their accounts and debit cards from a mobile app, today announced its collaboration with Mobile Devops company Bitrise. N26 has more than seven million customers and processed approximately $90 billion in transactions in 2021. The company recently raised $900 million to expand its offering across Europe and South America – a move that will depend on part of the faster-to-market mobile versions, while meeting strict compliance standards. Since starting work with Bitrise in June 2020, N26 has reduced the time it spends on org-wide mobile app testing by 80%, increased the frequency of its store releases applications from once every three weeks to nearly once a week, and has automated and expanded its security controls.
According to Insider, nearly 90% of consumers already use mobile banking. As financial transactions increasingly take place on mobile apps, banking apps must meet two main consumer demands: a fast and seamless transaction and a fully secure experience. For a company like N26, which is entirely mobile-based, the speed of its releases and updates in the Apple and Android app stores and the quality of its security isn’t just a mobile issue; they can make or break their whole business. And because it’s a regulated organization in a regulated industry, its technology partners must meet strict security standards.
Bitrise works with over 6,000 companies around the world to maximize the overall business impact of their mobile apps. Its customers include a high concentration of fintech companies whose revenue is largely or entirely generated on mobile. Over the past year and a half of working with N26, Bitrise has reduced company build times by 50% and reduced its average test times by 2.5 hours for a half hour. As a result, N26 was able to increase the frequency of its app store releases to almost once a week.
Bitrise further automated all mobile workflows and enabled N26 to extend critical security processes, such as threat modeling and vulnerability detection, to keep N26 app users safe. When N26 transferred responsibility for app security maintenance to Bitrise, it also accelerated critical security pre-screens in place to identify issues before the app went into testing for a full release.
Prior to working with Bitrise, N26 had a team of five dedicated to manual troubleshooting. The company now has nearly 80 mobile engineers dedicated to building new features and automating the release process through Bitrise.
“There is increased demand for digital banking, and with it increased pressure to constantly release updates to app stores,” said Dama Damjanovic, Principal Engineer at N26. “Bitrise has been instrumental in helping us not only run releases more efficiently so we can test new features and updates before releasing them to millions of live users, but also in ensuring the safety of our users’ banking information throughout the process.Luckily for us, Bitrise was the rare third-party vendor that quickly passed the verification checks and assessments that come with introducing new technology to a regulated financial institution.
Since starting to work with Bitrise, N26 has launched N26 Smart, its mid-tier subscription plan with advanced banking features; Income Sorter, a way for users to auto-save each time they get paid, Round Ups, which allows users to auto-save their spare change, and Split the Bill, which allows users to split payments with their family and friends directly from the application.
“Financial apps are redefining banking, but still have to meet the same regulatory requirements as traditional banks, not to mention the high expectations of consumers who have chosen to use them,” said Barnabas Birmacher, CEO of Bitrise. “From a mobile app development perspective, this means meeting the most stringent privacy and security requirements and continually introducing new features and functionality. Our work with N26 frees up their time to imagine and create new new features instead of monitoring mobile processes so they can stay ahead of competitors and focus on expanding.
Bitrise automates all critical processes that fall between N26 and their ability to release mobile app updates frequently. These processes include everything from building and testing new app versions to understanding the impact of new code on apps before they are shipped to app stores.
N26 is building the first mobile bank that the world loves to use. N26 was founded in 2013 and launched the initial product in early 2015. Today, N26 has served over 7 million customers in 24 markets and has a team of 1,500 people from 80 nationalities based around the world. With a full European banking license, state-of-the-art technology and no branch network, N26 has redesigned banking for the 21st century and is available on Android, iOS and desktop.
